Hey! Basketball is a very popular sport all over the world, so do you know the origin of basketball? The origins of basketball can be traced back to 1891, when it was founded in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA by James Naismith, a Canadian-born physical education teacher.
🏀 Background on the origins of basketball
Founder: James Naismith
He was a physical education teacher at the Springfield International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) in the United States.
At the time, the school wanted him to devise a sport for the winter season that could be played indoors and was intensely competitive and fun, in case the students became irritated by the lack of exercise due to the inclement weather.
📍 Initial thoughts and ideas for creating basketball
Naismith designed a brand new game based on previous ball games, combining elements of soccer, rugby and rugby passing.
Aims: to encourage teamwork and reduce body rushing whilst maintaining the intensity of the sport.
📚 First game of basketball
When: December 21, 1891
Where: gym at Springfield Training School
Number of participants: 18 students, divided into two teams of 9 players each
There were no special baskets at the time, so two peach baskets were used as baskets and hung on the walls at each end of the gymnasium. Since there were no openings, a ladder was used to remove the ball for each point scored 😅
📅 The original 13 rules of basketball (some examples):
1. The ball may be struck with the hand, but may not be punched.
2. no running with the ball; players must pass the ball in place.
3. No fouls may be committed against another person with the hands, shoulders or body.
4. One point is awarded if the ball enters the peach basket, and the game is won by the one who scores more points.
These rules have since evolved to form the globally accepted system of basketball rules that exists today.
Nowadays, basketball has grown to be one of the most popular sports in the world with hundreds of millions of fans and participants.
